Digital Gifts for Writers and Readers
There’s something special about giving gifts that inspire creativity and passion, especially for the writers and readers in our lives. As we approach the holiday season, I’ve put together a list of digital gifts that will delight anyone who loves to write or read. Let’s dive in!
First up, we have some fantastic writing software that can truly transform the writing process.
Scrivener is a favorite among novelists. It offers a structured environment to organize your ideas, research, and drafts all in one place. Perfect for those long-form projects, it’s like having your own writing assistant!
Then there’s Ulysses, which is all about simplicity and focus. It helps writers stay organized without distractions—ideal for those who crave a minimalist approach.
And let’s not forget Final Draft—the go-to software for screenwriters. It has all the formatting tools you need, making it easier to bring your screenplay to life.
Picking which one just depends on what your writer is looking for and what kind of writing they are doing.
There are plenty of great online writing courses for anyone looking for some help in learning to write. It's always great to have a bit of instruction when first starting out on your writing journey!
Depending on what your writer is looking for, you might want to check out MasterClass courses or you might want to check out a different approach. But there are plenty of courses out there for new writers. It's really just about picking a course that it more tailored to your writer's needs.
That being said, E-books on writing are also worth checking out! Especially if it's last minute. Sometimes it's much easier for a writer to be able to efficently sift through an e-book for what they need help with, rather than try to sort through an entire book. Especially at the cost of getting distracted from their project.
Every writer needs a reliable editing tool. There are plenty of great editors, and overall, it comes down to what your writer is looking for. Here's a couple of recommendations if you want to get your writer one of these platforms:
Grammarly: Overall, I would say Grammarly is better for non-fiction than fiction or genres that take place in fantasy worlds. That being said, it is great for way more than just checking your grammar. I like it because I'm able to check my tone, which I struggle to keep consistent when writing longer stories.
ProWritingAid: A bit more tailored to creative writing, ProWritingAid helps check writing style specifically, allowing you to improve drafts. If you're writer is looking for something more specific to creative writing, this is great.
Hemingway Editor: This editor gets very specific with sentence structure. This is also great for writers who struggle with getting their sentences out on paper well. For me, it helps with run-on sentences and helping make my writing more concise. Though I haven't used this editor much, I do think its great so far.
Audiobook Platforms
Lastly, we can't forget about our dear readers! If you wanted to go one step beyond the gift cards, I recommend audiobooks! This is especially great for readers who like to listen to book or are driving frequently, and like to listen to books on the ride.
Admittedly, I am not a big fan of audiobooks myself. However, if your reader is, this is a great idea. Audible is a fantastic platform that offers a lot of audiobooks. An Audible subscription is a great idea for those who are either too busy to read the books they love, or just love audiobooks in general.
They are also great for kids who struggle to focus on the page, and they are much more fun and interactive than just sitting and reading. So if your trying to get your child to read more, I would definitely suggest audiobooks and Audible!
As we wrap up this gift guide, I hope you find the perfect digital gifts to inspire your favorite writers and readers this holiday season! Merry Christmas!
