The Summary

If you love a good Hallmark movie, this book is for you! It is definetely a little cheesy, which I thought was kind of sweet. It was a bit cliche, as most romance books are, but overall I thought it was very cute and unique.

The story takes place on Harmony Ranch, which acts as a historical museum for visitors. The main character, Jocelyn Stone, returns home to help her injured grandmother, who owns the ranch. And runs into her childhood crush, Mack, who works as a blacksmith on the ranch.

There's obviously sparks and drama as the two try to save the ranch from being taken by the bank. It has a bit of old fashioned charm, plays into some cute cliches, and made me smile and laugh while reading.

The Review

Studying this from a writer's perspective, it played nicely into cliches while still keeping you entertained. I got to a point in the plot where I had to look at the back of the book, and I realized there was still so much left! The book seems to go through two major climaxes, at least it seemed like that to me.

The first focues on Jocelyn and Mack reuniting, kindling their old spark, and getting to know each other once more. The second brought some more drama around the ranch and Jocelyn's job in New York City.

Of course, there is the reunion at the end, which is both sweet and romantic. Jennie Marts brings so much tension around the reunion, almost to keep you guessing if Jocelyn is going to return at all.

I felt like the plot tied back into itself very well. Lots of plot points were tied up at the end, giving you a sense of completion to the story. I know that, personally, I like having side-characters stories get tied up without being invasive to the overall narrative. So seeing this made the book all the better.

On the note of cliches, the book plays into a couple of regular Hallmark-themes, but it wasn't overly cheesy. If you are looking for a cheesy romance, this is the book for you.

Jocelyn and Mack have a past, and I thought Jennie Marts did an excellent job with their banter and their past stories.

There is a classic miscommunication trope, which adds to the excitement and tension in the story. This is one of my favorite tropes, especially when considering the romance element and the third-person perspective that allowed us to see from both character's view.

The characters themselves were well-rounded. They had to be able to play into the cliches in the plot, so of course, they also had to be a bit cliche. The banter and dialogue was cute and easy. Overall, the character relationships did not feel forced to me.

The setting was amazing! Jennie Marts painted a good picture of the scene, without going overboard and boring us with paragraphs of details. I thought it was well-balanced between detail and dialogue.

The Rating

5/5 - My Overall Rating

5/5 - Ease of Reading

4/5 - Excitement

Reasoning:

I thought it was a great book overall. It was great for the genre and delivered it's purpose for my reading.

It was very easy to read, with balanced dialogue and description, and a good set up to the events. The story didn't have confusing turns and it was easy to follow.

While it was exciting, because it had some cliches, you could somewhat anticipate where it was going. For a romance book, I thought that was good. Personally, I like when the plot is set so nicely that you kind of know what to expect, not everyone does.
